Wharf District is the first area of the game; it's impossible to skip or do it out of order.

Repeater vs. Repeaterless

In NG categories, there are two possible routes in the first area. The Repeater route involves picking up and using the Repeater, while the Repeaterless Route skips it and relys entirely on the Hammer. The Repeaterless Route is ~1 second faster if done well, but is riskier and easier to lose time on. As the Repeater Route is safer and more consistent, it is recommended for newer runners. Both routes are described below.

Route

The level is divided into three individual parts: The Rippling Walls, The Sole Regret and The Wharf District.

NG Any%/ASL

The Rippling Walls

Timing begins when you gain control of the Kid after he gets up. Walk up the stairs and across the straight path, and pick up the Hammer as soon as possible. This will allow you to begin rolling. Roll to the right around the debris, then follow the path ahead. Take the upper path at the split around the gate and roll past the debris before the market area. A short cutscene will play in which a Gasfella appears. Roll to it and perform two stationary hits to kill it, then roll past it up the stairs.

  • Repeater Route
Pick up the Repeater, then roll up and around the wall and roll between the market stand and rock pile to clip through the debris. Roll to the fountain, interact with it, and immediately drink a health potion. Clear the walls around the fountain and wait for the six squirts to spawn. When they do, perform a moving hit to kill the top-left squirt, then roll to the top-right squirt and kill it with a moving hit. Move slightly up right and shoot the rest of the squirts with targeted repeater shots. This route will aggro each of the squirts and (usually) get them out of the way of the fountain. When all the squirts are dead, roll to entrance to the Sole Regret and enter it.
  • Repeaterless Route
Roll past the Repeater up and around the wall and roll between the market stand and rock pile to clip through the debris. Roll to the fountain, interact with it, and immediately drink a health potion. Clear the walls around the fountain and wait for the six squirts to spawn. When they do, perform a moving hammer hit to kill the top-left squirt, then roll to the top-right squirt and kill it with a moving hit. Walk slightly down to kill both of the squirts on the right with a moving hit, then walk back toward the last two squirts and use a moving hit on them. When all the squirts are dead, roll to entrance to the Sole Regret and enter it.

The Sole Regret

  • Repeater Route
When you gain control of the Kid, roll once towards Rondy (the corpse of the bartender), and shoot him with your repeater until he is destroyed (try to avoid hitting the box that's next to him). This will cause the Bullhead Shield to fall down sooner. Use the wait time to clear out the tables with moving hammer hits and the benches and crates with rolls. Pick up the shield immediately.
  • Repeaterless Route
When you gain control of the Kid, roll to the window to the right side of the room. This will cause the Bullhead Shield to fall down sooner. Use the wait time to clear out the tables with moving hammer hits and the benches and crates with rolls. Pick up the shield immediately.

After this, three groups of enemies spawn: The first is a single turret behind the bar. As it spawns, destroy it with two stationary hits. Two health potions will fall where the turret was.

After the turret is gone, two waves of boxes with small Gasfellas with them will start falling down. The fastest way to kill each is to roll into it and perform two moving attacks. The most optimal route results in two Gasfellas breaking out of their boxes. Kill them with two moving hits. It is possible to manipulate them such that you can hit both of them at the same time. There are a few different routes for the boxes. You can see a tutorial for one such route here.

The last wave of enemies is a swarm of Squirts and one big Gasfella. To leave the Sole Regret you have to kill all but two of these Squirts. Killing the Gasfella is optional, but if you don't do it, you will waste time due to getting freeze frames while accidentally hitting him trying to hit the Squirts, he will make it harder to move around and might actually kill you if you let him hit you two or three times. The best way to go about this fight is to Counter the Gasfella on his attempt to hit you (this will leave him at 1 hp) and kill every Squirt necessary with moving attacks. Leave two Squirts alive and leave through the window in the right side of the room.

The Wharf District

After landing, get up and roll towards the tree on the bottom of the screen. This should let you get past the brick wall that will soon fall without having to destroy it. Roll carefully through the planks and pick up Whirlwind. Keep moving until you find yourself between a pair of turrets and in front of a gate.

  • Repeater Route
Shoot the right turret with your Repeater and counter the upcoming shot from the left turret to kill it. This will open the gate.
  • Repeaterless Route
Perform a moving hit and a stationary hit to destroy the right turret and counter the upcoming shot from the left turret to kill it. This will open the gate.

Open the Distillery and the Arsenal, then immediately close them (in the Distillery, position you cursor at the bottom of the screen and press Esc, then click Accept).

The position and angle to execute the WD gate clip

Keep moving through the level until you reach a switch. Activate it immediately to get the barge you're standing on moving towards the end of the Wharf District. As soon as the barge reaches the stairs, move into the big platform and roll straight up towards the gate that you can see.

To clip through the gate, roll to the corner of the gate on the left side. Activate a Whirlwind, moving your cursor to the angle indicated in the picture. Roll as soon as possible once the Whirlwind ends, and you will roll into and past the gate.

After getting through the gate, pick up the Core, roll once up-right, then roll off the level to fall. If you didn't try rolling off the level too early, you should trigger a loading screen and be transported to the Bastion for the first time.

Roll to it and perform a moving hit to kill it, then roll past it up the stairs.

Pick up the Repeater, then roll up and around the wall and roll between the market stand and rock pile to clip through the debris. Roll to the fountain, interact with it, and immediately drink a health potion. Clear the walls around the fountain, move to the left of the entrance to the Sole Regret, and wait for the six squirts to spawn. When they do, shoot them with the homing shots from the Repeater. When all the squirts are dead, enter the Sole Regret.

The Sole Regret

When you gain control of the Kid, roll once towards Rondy (the corpse of the bartender), and shoot him with your repeater until he is destroyed. Aim for him, as the homing shots will not target him. This will cause the Bullhead Shield to fall down sooner. Use the wait time to clear out the tables, benches, and crates with the Repeater. Pick up the shield immediately.

After this, three groups of enemies spawn: The first is a single turret behind the bar. As it spawns, destroy it with a moving Hammer hit. Two health potions will fall where the turret was.

After the turret is gone, two waves of boxes with small Gasfellas with them will start falling down. The fastest way to kill each is with one moving attack. Move to each box as it falls and destroy it. If done well, no Gasfellas will break out of their boxes.

The last wave of enemies is a swarm of Squirts and one big Gasfella. Move to the bottom of the stairs to where Rondy was and shoot the enemies with the Repeater as they spawn. After the Gasfella is dead, move toward the center of the area and target squirts with your shots to direct the homing bolts better. Whenever you reload, you can use a moving Hammer hit or two to kill some more squirts. Leave two Squirts alive and leave through the window in the right side of the room.

The Wharf District

After landing, get up and roll towards the tree on the bottom of the screen. This should let you get past the brick wall that will soon fall without having to destroy it. Roll carefully through the planks and keep moving until you find yourself between a pair of turrets and in front of a gate. Shoot both turrets with the Repeater and go through the gate when it opens. Open the Distillery.

  • Any%
Equip Cham-Pain and close the Distillery by pressing Esc and clicking Accept.
  • ASL
Equip Cham-Pain, Black Rye, and Werewhisky and close the Distillery by pressing Esc and clicking Accept.

Cham-Pain and Black Rye are both close to the bottom of the list of spirits. To select them more quickly, position the selection at the top of the list, then press the Up arrow key. This will move the selection immediately to the bottom of the list, then to your cursor.

Roll to the Arsenal and open it. Set the first weapon slot to the Brusher's Pike and the second weapon slot to the Scrap Musket. You will then perform a glitch to exit the Arsenal. Click the Secret Skill slot and press Esc at the same time. If you are successful, the Secret Skill Menu will appear at the same time as the warning screen saying you must still equip a Secret Skill. Press enter to leave the Arsenal, then click Pike Vault to equip it as your Secret Skill. If you are new to the category, this glitch is not required.

Keep moving through the level until you reach a switch. Activate it immediately to get the barge you're standing on moving towards the end of the Wharf District. Execute the Barge Pike Vault to get to the arena, then perform a Pike Vault over the last gate.

After getting through the gate, pick up the Core, roll once up-right, then roll off the level to fall. If you didn't try rolling off the level too early, you should trigger a loading screen and be transported to the Bastion for the first time.

All Weapons

Follow the NG Repeater Route through the Rippling Walls and the Sole Regret. When you hit the ground at the beginning of the Wharf District, spam input as you get up. This will allow you to pick up the Breaker's Bow as soon as possible. From here on, follow the NG Repeaterless Route.
