  • If you collect too much fruit, there is another banana that can be avoided without time loss. It's in section 3, with the totems. It requires a fairly precise jump though.
  • Right at the end with the moving platforms, a shot is fired to intentionally slow down to 80. This increases the time window for jumping onto the second platform from 2 to 4 frames. It costs 4 frames though.

1-2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peW9o93UElI

  • The speed is intentionally slowed down to 80 in section 3 in order to skip another fruit (on the cloud). This saves overall ~10 frames, but also a 2-frame window for the first jump (the other jumps are buffered so not a problem). It's not possible to skip this fruit with speed 82. The alternative, which is safer, is shown in the video for 3-3.
  • Jumping over the bonus pot usually saves ~20 frames, but is a 1-frame jump. For what appears to be sub-pixel related, the number of fruit collected after jumping over the bonus pot varies. So the time gain can be both bigger and smaller.

1-3

  • The amount of life collected through the fruit is quite specific. Not when it's collected, but how much.
  • Collecting the fireballs on skateboard? It's shown in the following TAS: https://youtu.be/SgzAmX64ytk?t=180. This is a one-frame trick, but since it requires collecting the bonus pot as well, it doesn't save time over collecting the fireballs in 2-1. Because of the conditions for this to be possible (egg near the beginning of a ledge), this is the only place it can be done.

Area 2

2-1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzuFGJEQ6aM

  • The last fruit that was skipped in the first cloud platform section required a 1-frame jump.
  • It's worth trying for a speed manipulation on foot at the second whaler in section 4. If the speed is successfully manipulated to 75, the time-save is around 10 frames (for a cost of 1 frame for trying).

2-2

https://vimeo.com/568098080

  • Note how there is a speed manipulation on foot early on. The speed can't be reliably manipulated on foot (other than to get 73), so there is a factor of randomness involved. But the general rule is to release B and shoot slightly before you land and hope that Higgins lands on a speed that will lead to 74 or 75.
  • If the speed is successfully manipulated to 75 above, the time-save is around 10 frames.

2-3

  • The section skip is explained in section skips. Just keep in mind that there is a platform in section 2 that will also take you to the bonus stage. You need to jump over that one or else the second platform leading to the bonus stage won't be activated.
  • The timer is reset to 10 (big timer) when entering and exiting bonus stages, so the fruit collected in this stage doesn't matter.
  • The following video shows a faster setup for taking the bonus platform, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wwpLaVvzjI . It's 15-20 frames faster than dropping down on it, but requires a 3-frame jump and then releasing the D-pad at the right moment to get the default skate speed. Releasing the D-pad has a fairly large time window though (aim for when your vertical position is roughly between the two platforms).
  • It's possible to shoot the egg with the skateboard twice to get an early skateboard. It requires very good timing and mashing though for only a few frames saved.

2-4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9B7C8IB4Lq8

  • As can be seen in the video, the timer will be very close to running out if everything works out perfectly. However, there are a few fruits that are difficult to avoid, so this situation is not so common.
  • The exact strategy for the boss depends on what you prefer. Some players have developed a rhythm for shooting up to 4 shots per jump. This requires almost point blank distance. An easier, and slower, approach is shown here, which only allows for 2 shots with the first jump and then 3 shots per jump. One advantage of starting this far away is that you can use more or less the same strat on all bosses (except the last). You'll also be able to buffer jumps and continuously shoot until the boss has launched the first fireball without having to think about dodging. Bosses 6 and 7 are likely to shoot a second fireball though, which needs to be dodged. Another advantage of starting far away is of course that the screen will be scrolled as little as possible, which means the boss will leave the screen sooner.
  • In addition to the comment above, the second boss is so slow that it can be tricky to time three hits on the second jump because of the limitation of having at most 2 fireballs on screen at a time. This can be made easier by scrolling the screen slightly more to the right before starting to attack than for the other bosses. A good starting position for making it possible to get three hits in on the second jump is to have Higgins just touching the left edge of the pillar in the background. For subsequent bosses, this starting position can gradually be moved further and further to the left to account for their gradual speed increase.

  • It doesn't appear to be possible in real-time to not max out the timer near the end, so fruits are not taken into account in the route.
  • For a more detailed guide on how to clear the platforms in section 3, see 10 moving platforms.
  • The platforms in section 3 can be cleared a lot quicker (up to around 1.5 seconds), but at the cost of very precise inputs. It's referred to the available TAS(es) for how this can be achieved.

3-2

  • The part with the two raccoons tends to create a lot of lag. The solution shown here attempts to reduce lag as much as possible.

3-3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPTCYKhTnxE

  • Just like in 1-2, it's possible to skip another fruit in section 3 (on the cloud). Collecting the fruit is safer though and the reason it's shown here.
  • The shot before jumping onto the first cloud platform in section 4 was to make the following jumps easier. If you go with full speed, it's easy to either collect the banana or jump too far.

3-4

  • The part with the two raccoons is very laggy. The solution shown here attempts to reduce lag as much as possible.

  • Whether the last carrot is collected or not depends on the x-position. In theory, you should be able to avoid it 2/3 times (to look into this in more detail, x-position will be useful). Considering how all your actions until this point contribute to your x-position, it's difficult to see how it would be possible to manipulate the odds.
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFNBmaVyj88 is a slightly faster version of section 3. Depending on the x-position, you'll crash into the fire 1/3 (at least in theory). Again, it's difficult to see how it would be possible to manipulate the odds.

  • The last platform section requires good timing. The jump to the first platform isn't precise, but the earlier you jump, the longer you will have to ride it before jumping again, which is a small time loss since it moves to the left. The jump from the first to the second platform is always a 2-frame jump. A much safer way to pass it is to brake before jumping onto the first platform. It will cost a little over a second though.

5-3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB3w1tIOVOs

  • For a more detailed guide on how to clear the platforms in section 3 (including an option for a slightly faster method), see 10 moving platforms.
  • In the last part of section 1 (two bats and two fruits), it can be difficult to consistently collect the same fruit. If you collect the second fruit or none of the fruits, follow the route shown in the video. If you only collect the first of the two fruits, the life meter will run out unless you collect another fruit before the eggplant wears off. There is more fruit to collect without losing time, so it's not a big deal though.

Area 6

6-1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ic5Lk9hKNiQ

  • The timer will be close to run out at several points, so it's important to collect all the fruits shown in the video. An important aspect is to get 75 speed after stopping on the first cloud in the part before section 2 and then keep it until section 3 (by avoiding jump shooting).

6-2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owbt5XbF71w

  • For the route to work, the carrot in section 3 needs to max out the timers. There is a bit of leeway in terms which fruits to collect, but the easiest is just to collect as many as possible until that point.
  • The fruits collected after the carrot in section 3 have to be as shown in the video.

6-3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4vgKxOyWnk

The route in the first section is one of the harder to execute in the whole run. A safer way is the following:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNvzHwUsZfE
It's around 3 seconds slower though.
A good alternative in terms of risk-reward that could be considered is shown in the following video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulF8IWq8iPA. It's 0.5 seconds slower than the first video.

6-4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7gJQiBmYls

  • It's faster to drop the timer by tripping on the stones at the end than keeping the skateboard as long as possible.
  • See under 2-4 for some general comments about the boss strat.
  • This is the first boss that will almost for sure shoot two fireballs. With the same setup as for all the previous bosses, continuously attacking from buffered jumps works though. However, getting the fifth jump before the first fireball (and jumping over it on the sixth) is very tight and requires moving enough to the left during the jumps. The second fireball will also be tight to avoid unless continuously moving to the left. Going down to 4 jumps before the first fireball makes it quite a bit easier by not requiring as much moving to the left. Alternatively, you can start jumping earlier on, which will make it easier to get the 5 jumps before the first fireball. The downside is that it's not possible to launch three shots on the second jump and you'll still have to jump pretty "frantically" to keep up the rhythm, which creates a risk of jumping into one of the boss' fireballs.

Area 7

7-1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLKPoafm-AE

  • It will always be a very close call to run out of time. For safety, you can also just collect fruit(s) before the last moving platforms.

7-2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSrrI2IF830

  • Keeping the skateboard until the end of the level? The method can be seen in any TAS. It involves 6 precise button press changes. They can be broken down into two 1-frame, two 2-frame, one 5-frame and one 8-frame tricks (give or take a frame since not all combinations have been investigated). Since you anyways have to lose the skateboard so early in 7-3 (to collect the key), the overall time gain is only about one second.
  • The following video shows a way to get an early skateboard, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lRAUMqoTdg . It saves half a second, but is also quite risky.

7-3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XujHqdWF1OE

  • Same type of skip as already seen in 2-3.

7-4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCQn_G6R0V8

  • The two raccoons are defeated to reduce lag.
  • The egg plant adds around half a second of lag, but it still pays off by ending with a lower timer.
  • See under 2-4 for some general comments about the boss strat.
  • Unless you connect with all shots (like shown in the video), the boss will fire a third fireball, which can't be dodged by the continuous buffer jumping.
  • Because of the boss' speeding up compared to the previous bosses, it's not possible to get more than 4 jumps before the first fireball (and jump over it on the fifth jump). The timing for this is quite ok though. By continuing with the buffered jumps, it's possible to get jump six and seven before the second fireball and jump over it on the eigth jump. However, the eigth jump will be very tight and you need to be positioned quite far to the left to be able to dodge the fireball. The timing becomes much easier by waiting shortly after jump #6 and jump over the second fireball on jump #7.

Area 8

8-1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olshgOyLUlg

  • The first section is risky. A safer way is shown in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJOgh08IMxA .
  • There is a good opportunity for attempting a speed manipulation after jumping down from the highest point. If the speed is successfully manipulated to 75, the time-save is around 20 frames (for a cost of 1 frame for trying).
  • Some of the laggiest sections in the game are in this stage. The route shown in the video attempts to reduce lag as much as possible, but several seconds are still lost to lag.

8-2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFF7ycNfIdg

  • Tripping on the stone in section 3 reduces lag by quite a bit.
  • Some of the laggiest sections in the game are in this stage. The route shown in the video attempts to reduce lag as much as possible, but several seconds are still lost to lag.
  • The skipped on the cloud part of section 3 requires a 1-frame jump, so is only shown as a demonstration.
  • There is a 3-frame window for jumping in between the birds at the very end of the stage. Shooting in this area creates lag, but will also make it easier.

8-3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ2k-EOsL4M

  • It goes without saying that the two platform sections at the end require some practice to pin down. However, they don't contain any particular difficulties or actions that need to be performed during small time windows. They are therefore both fairly reliable once the route has been memorized. For a more detailed guide on how to clear the platforms in section 3 (including an option for a slightly faster method), see 10 moving platforms.

8-4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzBO06HkwAY

  • The first raccoon is defeated to reduce lag.
  • The boss requires a different setup than in previous stages. It moves so fast that continuous buffered jumps will be risky. Besides, even if you defeat it as early as possible, it will still have to return to the far right of the starting platform. The best strategy therefore seems to be to scroll the screen far enough so the last volley will hit the boss when it's close to the final position. How far to scroll the screen will be a bit individual, so each player will have to test what works best for them.
