This guide will cover the Warmastered Edition of the game on PC, using the most current version. Keyboard and mouse are the preferred method for speedrunning, as it allows for more precision and extra keybinds that make the run much faster. The spec requirements are not demanding, but if you notice excess loading hiccups while playing, lowering the Texture Quality in the advanced options settings should alleviate them. Framerate is incredibly important, however, it affects things like attack speed and the physics glitches, so if you're getting under 60-100 it's recommended to play in a lower resolution window so that the tricks work properly.

For faster resetting/launching of the game, it's recommended to rename the startup video files. You can find these in the game's install folder under \media\videos, you want to rename 7 files: AMD_Logo_movie, Kaiko_logo, main_menu_intro, start_screen_intro, THQ_LOGO1280x720, THQNORDIC_LOGO_Color_white, and Vigil_Logo1280x720. This skips the long series of movies on starting the game, and about 5 seconds each time you quit out to the menu. Renaming any other files affects scenes during gameplay, so we don't encourage that.
Swordcanceling is done by attacking (LMB) and canceling the animation by pressing Block (ALT) as soon as the sword hits the enemy.
+
The trick lies in the timing between the block and the next attack, as that those can be chained very quickly while the hit animation takes time.

=== Backdashing: ===
+
Timing is done with the in-game timer. It's active anytime the game world is running, meaning in-game cutscenes count toward your time, but menus, Vulgrim's shop, and movie cutscenes do not. All movie cutscenes can be skipped by holding RMB. The game's difficulty settings don't have an impact on the time, so everyone plays on Apocalyptic. The only difference is that enemies deal more damage to War, so while learning it's advised to play on Easy for the couple of fights that might be tough.
The backwards dash (Focus(Shift) + Direction(A|S|D) + Dash (ALT)) can easily be canceled into an Uppercut (hold LMB) wich can be canceled into another backwards dash.
+
*Be sure to disable subtitles in the game options, when they're present it hides the minimap, which you'll use through a lot of the run to keep track of where you're going.
This behaviour can be chained to achieve a higher movement speed.
+
* Since the player is not facing forwards anymore this is only recommended  after learning the route forwards.
+
* Since this technique relies on the Shift-Focus War will target the first enemy that comes into Shift-Focus-Range and will stay that way until the enemy is far away again.

*Focus: This game's version of Z-targeting, activated by holding Shift or toggled with F. Locks onto the closest enemy and generally behaves as a Zelda Z-target would.
When in the air, War is able to gain some slight additional height by Blocking (ALT). The amount of height gained is similar to using a [FlipSaw]-Move in the Air.
+
*Q-mode: Aim mode. Gets canceled with weapon attacks, but not Gear usage.
* To actually block in the airthe player has to let go of Forward (W) before blocking and repressing that Forward right after the block is done.
+
*Gear: Sub-weapon.
* While this move gives roughly the same height as the [FlipSaw]-Move, it has the advantage of being slightly faster and not homing in on enemies.
+
* Since this Trick requires the [CrossCounter] it is only used in Prologue in a Speedrun.

=== Keybinds ===
This is a nifty trick to figure out how far you can go on certain ledges. If you Dash (ALT), you cannot fall down a ledge until the dash is over. If you hold back (S) at that point, you will clearly see how far War can walk without risking a fall!

Infinite Jump is the main method of breaking the game after aquiring a second Subweapon.

Splitting up the inputs for Infinite Jump dashing allows us to be more flexible and consistent with all of the midair movement. The jump and next gear will end up being preference, it's been about a 50/50 split with runners so far.
Buttons required: Jump (Space), Switch Subweapon (F), Use Subweapon (Mouse Wheel Up)

This trick only works when multiple Subweapons are equipped (in this case 1:Gun/Horn, 2:Crossblade, 3:empty/whatever)

It's also recommended to put B as a second bind for Chaos Mode. This switches an empty bind to the "Toggle Walk" action, meaning you'll never get that accidentally. You can do something similar to disable summoning the Watcher.
You start out on your first Subweapon (press 1 if unsure). Then you press Jump and Switch Weapon at the same time 3 times in a row. Afterwards use the weapon.

If done correctly you will get another jump while in the air. This can be repeated as often as neccassary.

Note: This trick might not work on certain keyboards. Wireless ones in particular seem to not allow you to press two buttons at the same time!

Note: To gain the maximum height it is not helpful to spam the buttons. If you use the weapon when War begins his flip you should get the optimal heightbonus.

A lot of runners use a different Keyboard layout. A lot of runners bind Jump on 4 and Switch Weapon on 5, so they can press the two buttons right next to each other.

General Information

  • Be sure to disable subtitles in the game options, when they're present it hides the minimap, which you'll use through a lot of the run to keep track of where you're going.

Glossary

  • Focus: This game's version of Z-targeting, activated by holding Shift or toggled with F. Locks onto the closest enemy and generally behaves as a Zelda Z-target would.
  • Q-mode: Aim mode. Gets canceled with weapon attacks, but not Gear usage.
  • Gear: Sub-weapon.

Keybinds

Darksiders gives 2 bindings for every action, which ends up being incredibly helpful. Here are the most common rebinds you'll want to try out:

Function Keybind 1 Keybind 2
Jump Space 4
Block/Dash Left Alt Down Scroll
Use Gear Middle Mouse Button Up Scroll
Next Gear F or G 5
Focus Shift Mouse 4
Wrath Power Mode Caps Lock Mouse 5

Splitting up the inputs for Infinite Jump dashing allows us to be more flexible and consistent with all of the midair movement. The jump and next gear will end up being preference, it's been about a 50/50 split with runners so far.

It's also recommended to put B as a second bind for Chaos Mode. This switches an empty bind to the "Toggle Walk" action, meaning you'll never get that accidentally. You can do something similar to disable summoning the Watcher.

Settings

Certain settings need to be disabled for the optimal experience:

Subtitles: Subtitles will disable your minimap during gameplay. This can be very annoying especially for new runners

Game Tips: Game Tips take up to 2 seconds to load in which the player cannot open the menu. This can easily be avoided by disabling Game Tips.
