A zip glitch exists, unfortunately with little known other than it exists. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izAP1T0ps6U to see the zip in action.

Dynasty Warriors 4

  • Three difficulties are available, Easy, Normal, and Hard.
  • To attain the fastest route on Musou Mode, you must play a Musou that does not have a "Clear!" under it. You can play through a Musou Mode and still not get a "Clear!", but you must not save after the final stage. Unfortunately, there is no way to remove a "Clear!" if it is already there. You must destroy the save on the card and start fresh to remove it if one is there.
  • There's a bug with the transition to an event which allows you to almost immediately skip it. It helps to mash on the start button, but that doesn't always do it because the timing is a bit precise. Here is an example of the bug. Whether or not you actually execute the bug is irrelevant, because transitions and events don't add to the stage time, it merely helps with real-time.
  • Level 10 weapons give most charge attacks the attached Orb power without needing a full musou gauge.
  • Currently these are the fastest known routes for Musou modes:
    • Shu: The Yellow Turban Rebellion, Battle of Hu Lao Gate, Battle of Bo Wan Po, Battle of Chi Bi, Campaign for Cheng Du, Battle of Yi Ling, Battle of Wu Zhang Plains, Battle of Xu Chang.
    • Wei: The Yellow Turban Rebellion, Battle of Hu Lao Gate, Battle of Guan Du, Battle of Chang Ban, Battle of Chi Bi, Battle of He Fei, Battle of Wu Zhang Plains, Battle of Cheng Du.
    • Wu: The Yellow Turban Rebellion, Battle of Si Shui Gate, Battle of Hu Lao Gate, Assault on Liu Biao, Unification of Jiang Dong, Battle of Chi Bi, Battle of He Fei, Battle of Yi Ling, Battle of Cheng Du.
  • Stage strategies for stages that can take forever to win:
    • Guan Du:
      • Cao Cao's forces - If you have the upper left starting position (upper right and lower are a reset), defeat Wen Chou first, since he's right next to you. Guan Yu will "come out" once Yan Liang makes quick work of Wei Xu and Song Xian. Afterwards defeat Yan Liang, this will force Yuan Shao to appear. If you defeat Yan Liang before he kills Wei Xu and Song Xian, Guan Yu will not charge, and you will have to defeat every officer on the map before Yuan Shao appears!
    • He Fei:
      • Cao Cao's forces - You must defeat Sun Jian before he crosses the bridge and Zhang Liao destroys it. Then after a minute or so (kill Taishi Ci to eat it up, but only if you are quick enough) Sun Jian will appear in the left half of the southern camp, and you can kill him there.
    • Wu Zhang Plains:
      • Cao Cao's forces - The level plays out according to Sima Yi's position. Defeat Jiang Wei, and hang around at his spot until the scene of Sima Yi charges to the gate plays out. When it does, proceed to the southernmost point on the map, which is where Liu Bei will appear.
    • Unification of Jiang Dong:
      • Sun Jian's forces - Once you kill Liang Gang to enter the castle, an event will trigger Liu Xun to retreat and the door's being closed on you. You must get to Liu Xun before the doors close. Red Hare will allow you to get to him quickly enough, but staying mounted is a hassle. Shadow Harness will work just as well, just don't screw around.
    • Battle of Cheng Du:
      • Wu forces - Liu Bei will appear after Zhuge Liang tells the ambush parties "it is time." You can trigger it by going deep enough in the forest. If you get the lower starting position, you'll either have to wrap around and trigger it from behind or go up to the castle through the bridge that Zhang Fei does not destroy.
      • Wei forces - Liu Bei will appear after Zhuge Liang tells the ambush parties "it is time." You can trigger it by going deep enough in the forest. However, the Siege Rams are the only things that will open the castle doors, so stick to the lower path. Equip the Shadow Harness so you can get through the minefield quickly.
      • Nanman forces - No siege rams for this group, so follow the Wu strategy.
    • The Yellow Turban Rebellion:
      • Yellow Turbans - If using an Edit Character, Zhang He, or Zhang Liao, defeat Gongsun Zan, He Jin, Huangfu Song, and Zhu Jun in that order. Cao Cao appears in the northeast near your starting position, take him out first. Liu Bei should already be in the center, steal Red Hare from Guan Yu if you need to, he appears nearish Zhang Jiao just west of center; defeat Liu Bei. Proceed west to beat Sun Jian, then head all the way north to beat Dong Zhou. Lu Bu may or may not appear immediately afterwards, what causes this is currently unknown. If Lu Bu appears, defeat him first, otherwise beat Yuan Shao. Lu Bu will then appear and when you beat him, The World Knows Peace! If using Zhang Fei, swap the order of Gongsun Zan and Huangfu Song, Cao Cao and Sun Jian. The rest will play out the same. The breakdown of how officers appear:
        • Dong Zhuo appears once He Jin is defeated. He spawns in the northeast corner of the northern camp.
        • Yuan Shao appears once one of Cao Cao, Liu Bei, or Sun Jian is defeated. He will always appear before the last of the three major rulers appears. He appears on eastern half of the long horizontal "tunnel" just before the turn north to Dong Zhuo.
        • If you forced Cao Cao and Liu Bei to appear, Sun Jian will appear once Cao Cao is defeated. Sun Jian will also appear based on a timer once Gongsun Zan is defeated. If you forced Sun Jian and Liu Bei to appear, Cao Cao will appear once Sun Jian is defeated, and he will also appear once enough time has passed after you defeat Huangfu Song. Sun Jian appears just above the western divider, Liu Bei appears in the center of the map, and Cao Cao appears north of the eastern divider on the map.
        • Lu Bu appears once all other officers are dead, or he can sometimes appear immediately after Dong Zhuo is defeated. What causes this is currently unknown. He spawns right next to Yuan Shao's spawn point.
    • Battle of Chi Bi:
      • Cao Cao's forces - While you can simply charge to Sun Jian/Sun Quan for victory, in order to properly prevent the Fire Attack's ploys so Jian Ye is avoided, you must get to Pang Tong before he chains the ships together, and you must defeat Zhuge Liang before he summons the wind.
  • Though it can take some time, the best way to farm some items is in The Wu Zhang Plains on Shu's side, because there's 5 item boxes and this is one of the "difficult" levels, so it renders better items.
  • A bug that mostly relagated to multiplayer, the Shadow Harness is actually just a flag that prevents you from falling off of a mount. You merely need to start with Shadow Harness to maintain the effect. With this, you can swap horses with a second player that has Red Hare so you cannot get knocked off of that, allowing for insane access to many places. This bug still exists in Xtreme Legends.

  • Two additional difficulties were added, Beginner and Expert.
  • The expansion adds Orb power to True Musou attacks with those with indirect attacks (Zhen Ji, Pang Tong, Sima Yi, etc). A level 4 Fire or Vorpal Orb will severely beat up on groups and officers, provided nobody blocks the attack, or the Blast Orb is equipped to pierce the blocking.
  • Level 11 weapons have additional attributes which can greatly aid that character, and still have the benefit of a Level 10 weapon. Xiahou Dun's Level 11 weapon, Kirin Blaze, has attributes of Level 16 Tortoise Amulet, Level 20 Nanman Armor, Level 12 Seven Star Sash, and Level 18 Elixir. Elixir and Tortoise free up two potential item slots for better run preparation.
  • There's a bug with enemy AI you can do to reduce almost everyone to spectators. Start a game on Hard/Expert difficulty, interim save while playing, soft reset (Start + Select) to the title screen, set the difficulty down to Beginner/Easy, start a new game of any kind, and say yes to the warning. After you start playing, soft reset again and continue your interim save. All enemies will have the health of Hard/Expert, but the AI of Beginner/Easy. This bug does exist on DW4.
  • An easy way to farm items is in Legend of Meng Huo's stage (Alternate normal quality version). Hard will generally give you higher level items more consistently, whereas Expert is a bit of a crapshoot, and has the entire range. Pick whatever you believe will give the best results.

  • Level 4 weapons are generally the best weapons for any character, but with some persistence, you can acquire Level 3 weapons with random stats which could be better overall than the uniques. It depends on your play style and the stats.
  • One glitch that speedrunning this game requires to be done is called 'Gate Clipping' where you can position yourself inside a gate's invisible wall and save and quit to reload on the other side of the gate therefore allowing you to go out of bounds behind some gates. This glitch is demonstrated at 4:55 of this video: http://www.twitch.tv/deshio/c/4576169

Xtreme Legends

  • The expansion adds the ability to earn scrolls after any task, which allow easier methods to power-up character stats and weapons (not uniques!). These methods include:
    • Exiting/dying out of Xtreme Mode.
    • Completing a stage in Free Mode/Musou Mode/Legend Mode.
  • The Battle of Guan Du on Cao Cao's side (alternate LQ version) can be completed in under 2 minutes, and on Chaos difficulty you will earn 6 scrolls. With any task, which scrolls you acquire are random.
  • With the addition of the scrolls, all you need to do is acquire a Level 3 weapon with the stats you want, then use the scrolls to power up the stats. This should give you a significantly better weapon than the uniques.

Empires

  • Since it takes 5 moves to level weapons up, it is recommended that you stick with the default one and build it up as best you can. Chaos difficulty will net you the best stats fairly consistently, but it is very hard to succeed any mission.
  • The Tactic "Neutral Start" is a crapshoot in the sense that you can very quickly get to the commander's main camp, but you may also lose good starting position. Depending on the situation, "Equal Start" may be a better choice.
  • The items in each territory are randomly generated upon game start, so completing the game is itself a crapshoot. Aim for Red Hare, Green Scroll, Fire Orb, Wind Scroll, Tiger Amulet, Ginseng, and Herbal Remedy.
  • It takes exactly 5 seconds from the time the last "holder" of a base dies until you claim it. Holders of a base are Guard Captains and any officer that walks in. If killing officers or commanders takes too long, you can simply throw them out with a crowd-clearing move, then abusing their AI so they defend next to you outside their own camp, giving you an easy victory.
