Weapon Mechanics

R Upgrade

The R (Rapid) upgrade makes any gun (including the peashooter) fire faster. If you pick up another weapon the R upgrade is lost. If you have a weapon like spread, collect the R upgrade, and then pick up another spread the R upgrade is lost.

Machine Gun

The machine gun has automatic fire if you hold the B button, however if you mash the B button the gun fires even faster. The machine gun has a shot limit of 8 shots on the screen at once versus 4 shots on the screen at once over the peashooter so it is much more powerful than the peashooter.

Spread

Generally the most powerful weapon in the game. The gun fires a wave of five shots and you can have up to 10 spread shots on the screen at once. You can keep firing spread shots as long as there are less than 10 shots on the screen. This can be used to manipulate the wave of spread shots into a straight stream, although this technique is not as useful as it was in the first Contra game.
The health of certain enemies and bosses increases if you have the spread gun. This means that spread gun is not always the ideal weapon when running the any % category of this game. If you are doing a co-op speedrun and both players have spread, the health of certain enemies and bosses increases even more. You can refer to the weapons damage and enemy health spreadsheet for more details.

Flame

The flame gun has a standard shot that will disperse in 4 directions when it hits a target. If you press and hold the B button for 33 frames (just over half a second) you get a charge shot. The charge shot penetrates minor enemies like soldiers and when it hits a wall or an enemy that takes several shots to kill it will collide and expand into 8 directions. This is the only gun that can do more than 1 damage per frame. You can have up to two flame shots on the screen at once. The shots have to disperse completely before they are considered off the screen. Charge shots only count as one shot. You can release a charged shot and immediately press B again to fire shots quickly.

Laser

A laser beam is fired and the entire beam will do 4 damage. Only one beam can be fired at a time with this gun. If you fire one beam and then fire another beam the first beam of laser will disappear. This weapon is not used in speedrunning.

Glitches/Mechanics

Slopes

Your character moves more slowly on upward slopes. When climbing a long sloped hill in places like stage 1 it is important to jump as frequently as possible to avoid losing time.

Ledge Catching

When jumping up to a slope in Super C you have to have a certain height in order to land on the slope and not fall through it. If you jump up and move toward a slope at the height of your jump you can "catch" the slope when the height of your jump would normally be too low in order to land on it properly. Simply put, if a ledge slopes to the right press right at the top of your jump to catch a ledge. This lets you climb up certain places in area 5 and area 8 much faster than you normally would be able to.

Boss Vulnerability Times

Several bosses in Super C are on the screen for very long periods of time before they are actually vulnerable. In order to maximize damage it's important to have your shots ready to hit the moment a boss becomes vulnerable. Unless mentioned here, all other bosses are vulnerable immediately.

  • Stage 3 Midboss - Vulnerable just before the turrets shoot
  • Stage 3 Boss - Vulnerable as soon as the center core reaches the center of the screen (before the other turrets appear)
  • Stage 5 Boss - Vulnerable as the 3rd skull drops from the carrier
  • Stage 6 Boss - Vulnerable when the head snake on the right reaches the bottom of the screen
  • Stage 8 Boss - Vulnerable as the boss rises most of the way out of the ground, but before the eye opens

This applies to the midboss and boss from area 3, the boss from area 5, the boss from area 6, and the final boss in area 8.

Stage 8 Ceiling Glitch

This glitch lets you skip certain parts of stage 8 and it can save either some time or a lot of time depending on the category that you run. To do it you'll need to reach the slope that is just part the first "standing" mouth turret in the stage. This is the first slope where you walk left. You need to walk left far enough to get the screen to start scrolling as you move right. Instead of jumping up to the next slope, you'll retrace your steps on the lower slope. Next jump into the pit in the middle. Get as far to the right as you can and just before you fall into the pit tap left to bounce backward. If you performed the trick properly you will be transported to the slope on the far right side of the screen. Proceed right normally. After you pass the two item pods the ceiling will glitch out and crush you. When you respawn, continue moving right. You will be running on the ceiling and it will be moving up and down. You will need to practice learning how to avoid the orbs that spawn and dealing with the random enemies. As you reach the end the crushing ceiling will disappear and you will fall and land on solid ground and you can continue the stage normally.
